Victoria Mills statement update 6.00pm Monday 1 February 2016

A North East Lincolnshire Council spokesperson said:

“Part of the A16 Victoria Street North in Grimsby will close at 10pm tonight (Monday) due to safety concerns about the nearby Victoria Mills building. A section of the road will be closed between the Lockhill roundabout on the A180 and Corporation Bridge.

“As reported, the Council is evacuating apartments at the Victoria Mills building due to concerns over a turret on the building’s west elevation. Under advice from a structural engineer, we have been monitoring the building twice per day since December.

“Victoria Mills is a privately-owned listed building and a separate part of it has been converted into apartments. Turrets on the unoccupied Silo part of the building are being monitored and one appears to have moved today in the high winds.

“More high winds are forecast for tomorrow (Tuesday) and as a precaution the road is being closed temporarily. It is likely to remain closed until Tuesday afternoon at the earliest.

“Security fencing is being put around the building and security guards will be present overnight. The Council’s homelessness team have been finding temporary accommodation for people affected by the evacuation.

“Any Victoria Mills residents affected by the evacuation and in need of alternative accommodation are asked to call the Council’s homelessness team on 01472 313131.

“The building’s owners have been contacted about the action the Council is taking.”
