The conference room at Service Headquarters hosted the first two of four FREE business safety seminars to be held this week.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service (HFRS) are holding Business Fire Safety Education Seminars in Hull and Grimsby this week aimed at assisting local businesses comply with fire safety legislation. The first two at SHQ attracted a total of 52 delegates from a wide range of companies and organisations from the Hull and East Riding area who were keen to learn about fire safety legislation and their responsibilities as employers.

HFRS want to offer as much support and guidance as it can to help business owners reduce the risk of fire affecting infrastructure and endangering staff. Many businesses sadly remain unaware of their statutory requirements, but are legally bound by them.

As the enforcing authority for this legislation, HFRS periodically audit businesses to verify compliance as part of a Risk Based Inspection Programme. The Business Safety team conduct in excess of 3,000 audits per year on commercial premises. They can contact any business at any time in the Humber region to carry out an audit of fire safety measures and will require details on the significant findings of Fire Risk Assessment.

The take up for the sessions has been excellent, although there are a few spots available at the Cromwell Road in Grimsby sessions on Thursday 17 March. Attendees will be provided with:

• Awareness of legislation and responsibilities for a Fire Risk Assessment
• Advice on how to carry out a Fire Risk Assessment
• An understanding of what to expect when premises are audited by HFRS
• An opportunity to meet Business Safety Inspectors and Managers and ask any questions as part of the group or confidentially
