Shared Accomodation
If you live in a flat or bed sit, you are more at risk from fire than if you live in a single family dwelling house. The building should be provided with a safe escape route that is protected by fire resistant walls and fire doors. The aim of this protection is to give time for all occupants to leave the building in the case of an emergency.
Reducing the Dangers
Make sure all members of your household know:
- The position of escape routes and exits.
- How to get out of the building in the event of fire. Have an escape plan.
- How the fire alarm works.
- How to call the Fire and Rescue Service.
- Never wedge open fire doors or remove door closing devices - a fire door can only protect you if it is kept closed.
- Keep escape routes free from obstructions and storage.
- Fit a smoke alarm in your flat or room.
What to do if A Fire Occurs
If you are not trapped by fire:
- Sound the alarm.
- Get out of the building as quickly as possible, closing all doors behind you.
- Telephone the Fire Brigade from a neighbour's or a public telephone.
- Do not go back in for any reason.
If you are trapped in your room:
- Close the door and block any gaps which might let smoke or fumes through.
- Shout from the window for help so that neighbours and the Fire Brigade know that you are there. Click here for more advice on surviving a fire.
