Bonfires
Bonfires can get out of control if you are not careful. It is advisable to attend an organised bonfire rather than have your own private one. That way you can sit back and enjoy a safe bonfire while the experts do all the hard work!
If you do intend having a private bonfire, observe the following safety precautions:
- Keep the size of bonfire to a minimum
- Depending on the size of the bonfire it should be build well away from any house, tree, fence or shed etc.
- Be careful with what you are wearing. Loose clothing may catch light easily.
- Don't light bonfires in windy conditions and don't light it until after all fireworks have been let off.
- Don't leave bonfires unattended. An adult should have the time to supervise until all material is consumed.
- If the bonfire has to be left it should be dampened down with water.
- Keep a bucket of water or a hose pipe handy just in case.
- Build bonfires well clear of buildings, garden sheds, fences and hedges.
- Never use flammable liquids to start the fire, use household firelighters.
- Never burn dangerous rubbish such as aerosols, paint, foam furniture, batteries etc.
- Before you light the bonfire check that children and animals are not hiding inside, ensure no-one has placed gas canisters or aerosols in it and make sure everyone is a a safe distance away.
- Never attempt to light a bonfire when under the influence of alcohol.
