Shortlist announced for Local Hero Award sponsored by Howdens Joinery

15 September 2017

The shortlist for this year’s Local Hero Award is now out and we need your help to find the winner!

Shortlist announced for Local Hero Award sponsored by Howdens Joinery

Sponsored by Howdens Joinery, this is the only award at this year’s glamorous event that is decided by public vote. We received entries from all over the Humberside Service area and it was a challenge to whittle them down, and these two stood out to be put to a public vote. The winner will be announced at the Humberside Fire and Rescue Service Community Awards on Friday 17 November 2017.

The nominees are as follows:

Terry Mitchell

Terry is a PCSO with Humberside Police and prior to this he served 13 years in the Royal Corps of Transport. Over the years, Terry has organised and taken part in epic challenges to raise funds for Help for Heros and for the Yorkshire Regiment to honour a fallen soldier in a recent battle in Afghanistan, which included a cycle ride from Westminster, London to Hull within 18 hours.

More recently he’s been instrumental in raising funds for the Hull Veterans Support Centre which is a registered charity providing support and guidance for HM Armed Forces Veterans. Challenges have included a walk from the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Westminster Abbey to Hull and, more recently, a walk from Oppy Wood, near Arras in Northern France, back to Hull whilst bringing back the names of Hull soldiers who had fallen in the Battle of Oppy Wood.

Terry's passion to do all he can to raise vital funds for veterans, whilst working as a PCSO for his local community, would make him a worthy winner of the Local Hero Award.

Paul and Corey Wilson

Father and son, Paul and Corey Wilson of Grimsby, were in the right place at the right time when they spotted a fire at the front of the property and bravely rescued the owner.

As Paul and Corey passed the property off Stanage Walk, Grimsby in January 2017 and they saw an elderly man trying to find a way to escape as the fire was blocking the front door and starting to spread. Without a second thought for their own safety, the father and son quickly broke the living room window and pulled the elderly man out of the building, who was later treated by the Fire Service. Their quick thinking and selfless act potentially saved the gentleman’s life which gives them a deserved place on the shortlist.
