This Christmas fire fighters from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service are urging residents to have a safe and enjoyable time. By following this simple advice everyone can make the most of the festivities whilst ensuring that they do so in a safe manner.

• Christmas lights – check that your Christmas lights conform to the British Standard. Always use current device, which is a safety device that can save lives by instantly switching the power off, on outdoor electrical equipment. Always turn off your Christmas lights before you go to bed.

 • Candles – be extra careful when using candles, never use them near to your Christmas tree or decorations and never leave them unattended.

• Electrics – never overload sockets. Turn off electrical appliances at the plug when they are not in use and especially when you leave the house or go to bed.

• Cooking – the risk of accidents, especially in the kitchen is greater especially after alcohol is consumed, never leave your cooking unattended.

• Smoke alarms – check that your alarm is working once a week and give it a Hoover out to remove any dust. Do not remove the battery for use in a children’s toy as this could mean the difference between life and death.

• Decorations – decorations can burn easily, don’t attach them to lights or heaters.

 • Take time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours this Christmas – make sure they are fire safe.

 • Driving – don not drink and drive, get a taxi or have a designated driver. Take extra care on the roads, watch your speed and concentrate on the road in front of you.

Dan Hind from the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service said; “we all want to have an enjoyable Christmas so by taking a little extra time to check that your home is safe from fire could make that life saving difference” “fire fighters from your local fire station are always more than happy to give you advice on how every one can make the most of the festive season”.
