Householders urged to check and see whats lurking under their stairs
30 November 2007 - 10:35

Fire fighters are urging people to look at what is stored in under stairs cupboards.

A recent trend has identified the accidental fires have been worsened due to excessive storage of unnecessary items.

Some of these fires can be caused by faulty electrical installations and often go undetected due to the absence of a smoke alarm.

Fuse boards are often located in the under stairs cupboard and should be fitted with correct fuse and regularly serviced by a qualified electrician.

Officers from the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service are asking people to look at what is stored there to reduce the quantity and is it really necessary for it to be there.

If possible relocate these items to a safer more suitable location such as a garage and/or shed.

Laura Hanson from the Humberside Fire & Rescue Service said; Reducing the amount of clutter in the under stairs cupboards can dramatically cut down on the risk of fire in your home.

We ask that people test their smoke alarms once a week and that the batteries are replaced every year.
